Serengeti Simba Lodge opened its doors on 14 February 2011, the first of our lodges. It sits high on a hill above the western Serengeti, built around a natural rocky outcrop, with views that run all the way to the Grumeti River. Every one of its 21 rooms faces the savannah. The lodge stands in the Ikona Wildlife Management Area, just outside the national park near Fort Ikoma Gate. That address comes with freedoms the park can't offer: night game drives in the dry season, and neighbours who are the Ikoma people themselves.

Karatu Simba Lodge sits in the farming country of the Karatu district, near the village of Rhotia and right alongside the Ngorongoro Forest. It's cooler and greener than the savannah, with views across the fields to the forest and the far hills. The farms around us change colour with the seasons, barley and wheat, then sunflowers and pigeon peas, which the forest elephants come down to raid at night. Our Iraqw neighbours have looked after this land for generations.
